After his discharge from the service, he joined the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Strong Memorial Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Neurology (1968-72) and director ofEEG laboratories (1970-72).
From 1972 until 1976 he served on the faculty of the University of Utah College of Medicine as an assistant professor.
In 1976, Dr. Summers tons recruited by the St. Vincent Health Center in Erie, Pa., where he accepted a position as Chief of Neurology. In 1978 he was appointed Staff Neurologist and electrophysiologist at the St. Vincent Health Center, a position he still holds. He also serves as a consultant and instructor in neurology at several educational institutions in the Northeast,
In 197k Dr. Summers was appointed by former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare (now Health and Human Services) Caspar Weinberger to the National Advisory Council of Services and Facilities for the Developmentally Disabled, an organization concerned with services and funding for epilepsy, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, autism and related neurological disorders.
