You can help prevent the citizens of Virginia from being conned into inviting a multiplicity of problems by expanding legal gambling. First, a summary. Next, a suggestion.
By pushing gambling (including lotteries), the states encourage people to gamble their lives on drugs and waste their resources on fantasies. That discourages the working at constructive problem solving and promotes a plague of drug law violations. Witness the 1985 arrest rate for them per 100,000 people which was 111 percent higher in gamblebig Maryland than in limited-bingo Virginia.
In their mad grab for dollars, states disregard gambling’s destructive impact on individuals and families. They ignore the way citizens turn to crimes that reflect the way those states defraud their people of the money the poor and others need for proper nutrition of bodies and minds.
