“Elizabeth has been galloping horses for Paul Fout and Ray Norton and she has some mounts this spring in the flat races at the pointto-points. The most important thing I’ve told her is to save that ground and get your horse to relax. Your horse has to relax and rate for you — especially in the longer hurdle and timber races. ”
“Rating” the horse is always a concern of jockeys. The longer distances (I1/* to 4 miles) of the jump races demand that a horse go easily at first and not run out of steam before the race is over.
One rider who is fairly new to the point-to-point scene is John Beasley, who owns, trains and rides the 1986 Virginia point-to-point mare of the year, My Happy Way. Mr. Beasley says that Happy always listens to him and that she rates well.
