First Colony Series champion Nelson Gunnell of Middleburg, who captured his First Colony title two years ago when he was a high school senior, says he is still learning the craft of race-riding.
“Give me another 10 years,” Mr. Gunnell said with a laugh, “then maybe I’ll be a jockey. I’ll probably never know everything I want to about racing. I’ve got the best teacher in the business, though, to help me.”
Mr. Gunnell is talking about “Speedy” Smithwick, his neighbor in Middleburg. “The most important thing Speedy has taught me is when you leave that paddock, just clear your mind of everything but the race and the instructions that the trainer has given you.
