An investigation by the Virginia Division of Occupational Safety and Health into an accident at the Rappahannock Gourmet Fruit and Produce Co. in Sperryville failed to produce a definite answer as to what caused five employees of the company to become ill on Dec. 17.
Jan Hatchcock, a public information officer with the Department of Labor and Industry, which oversees the occupational health and safety division, said Tuesday that an inspection the day after the accident failed to pinpoint the cause of the illnesses.
The type of symptoms described by the employees indicated the possibility of exposure to carbon monoxide,’' she said, adding that the use of a propane-fueled forklift inside the building lent some credence to that hypothesis.
"Apparently, the forklift could have generated some carbon monoxide,” she said, “but the driver had instructions not to run it for extended periods in any enclosed spaces.”
