Warden Bankston theorized that the deer had come down from the Shenandoah National Park, where food is scarce, to the orchards and fields of Rappahannock County where forage is more plentiful.
He added that statewide the deer kill set a record as well, up 20,000 from last year.
Fewer bear were taken in Rappahannock than in most years. Only five were checked (four male, one female) compared to an average of 13 to 14, he said.
Turkey hunters had an average year in the county, Mr. Bankston said. Sixty-eight gobblers were taken; 27 males and 39 females.
Rockingham County led the state in deer taken, with a total of 5,251 checked. Albemarle County had the most bear checked in the state, 59. And turkey hunters found a bountiful harvest in Bath County, taking 506 during the season.
Warden Bankston also reported that the game violations ran “about average” during the season, despite the fact that there were fewer hunters in the woods.
