Among the local sanctioned meets the Middleburg Spring Races have already announced that their purses will double to $78,000, including a $25,000 open hurdle race.

“It’s a matter of quality rather than quantity,” says Race Chairman Chris Dana. “Every year we have so many entries we have to turn some away, but maybe we’ll get some big, famous horses with these increases.”

Last year, for the first time, the steeplechase circuit had an overall sponsor, with Chase Manhattan Bank offering a $50,000 season-long brush jumping competition.

The sport also made its debut on television with the Breeders’ Cup race going out live to an international audience at prime time.
