Environmental factors can be major contributors toward depression. I think many of us can identify times in our lives when we have felt a serious loss or stress and the inevitable sad or blue feeling.
Any change may trigger this feeling. A move to a new home, the death of a loved one or the loss of a job are but a few of the causes. Sometimes the feelings are temporary but sometimes treatment is required to alleviate the symptoms.
It is interesting to examine various populations in our society thyt appear to be particularly vulnerable to depression. For instance, up until age 65 twice as many women as men are treated for depression. After age 65, the percentage of people treated for depression becomes more equal between the sexes as a higher ratio of men seek professional help.
