As people obey states’ pleas to mismanage resources, problems multiply. Then governmental costs go up in an effort to cope.
During the gambling riddled 1800s crime and corruption were so terrible that the American people rose up to get most gambling outlawed by 1900 - a time of great power for organized crime. Result - the crime rate declined from 1900 to 1950. As gambling doors have opened, crime has climbed. In 1960 the likelihood of an individual’s being the victim of a violent crime was one in 625. According to US News & World Report (5/20/85, p. 18), in 1985 that likelihood had become one in 33.
