Take the owner/rider First Colony series as a starter. Those hurdle races weren’t filling, so the committee met and suggested lowering the carrying weights from 175 pounds to 160, he said.
The 175-pound weight limit virtually precluded women jockeys, but now the new weight limit encourages women to enter that particular series.
Council members’ collective efforts also improved hunter pairs racing, set rider age limits, encouraged year-end awards programs, devised a centralized entry system and came up with a workable spring and fall race schedule.
Both Mr. Young and Mr. Winants agreed that establishing a workable date rotation has made all the difference.
