according to Charlie Colgan, the executive vice president of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, steeplechase purses have grown 100 percent.

Last year chasers raced for more than $2 million at 37 race meets. A total of 222 races, run by 610 different horses, brought total purses of $2,436,221 to the steeplechase industry. That represented a growth of $699,026 in purses and 65 more horses on the field over 1985.

In 1987 purses are expected to increase still further.
