Around here people run their horses over fences whether there’s money or not,” says Mrs. D. M. Smithwick, a highly successful breeder and trainer of steeplechasers from Middleburg. “I think it’s just because they like to see their horses run.”
Besides training horses Mrs. Smithwick also helps young novice riders get started racing over fences. Several young riders have apprenticed at her barns and gone on to successful riding careers.
