terwards that his scores had qualified him for consideration for appointment and he was asked to submit to a physical exam and take a fitness test.

Sen. Trible received a total of 1,300 requests for nominations to the four service academies. The usual procedure is for the representative to nominate the person of his choice from his district to the Air Force Academy. Then a committee from the Academy reviews the nominee’s scholastic record and approves or rejects the nomination.

“However,” Jonathan said, “I was lucky. I heard from the Academy before I heard from Sen. Trible. I had an early offer from the Academy pending the senator’s nomination. I now have an appointment pending a medical review.”

(Jonathan does not have the 20/20 vision which is required for flight training. He would therefore become part of the one-third of the class which is granted a waiver.)

Jonathan will report to the Academy in early July. The first few days are spent filling out forms to allow the cadets time to get accustomed to the rarified atmosphere in the Rocky Mountains. The Academy is located IV2 miles above sea level, and several weeks are required for a person’s lungs to become adapted to the thinner atmosphere.
