Both point-to-points and NSHA meets offer different types of races: flat, hurdle and timber.
A race run on the flat, or “on the turf” as most programs term the race, is run on a course without obstacles. The course is rarely flat, however, but twists and turns through the rolling countryside.
Horses are often entered in flat races to warm up for running over hurdles or timber later in the season. Entering a race on the flat at a point-to-point is also a good way to familiarize a young horse with all the different sights and sounds he or she will encounter at a
