I graduated as valedictorian in 1960, and in 1961 received one of the first Abby Aldrich Rockefeller scholarships, thereby being enabled to complete my college education at Virginia State University (then Virginia State College) in 1954.
Meanwhile, my high school science teacher, Mrs. Ophelia Gist Hawkins, had become another essential link in the chain of events which led to my enrollment in medical school. She encouraged me to remain steadfast while promising to provide financial support.
