“We love our way of life in this county. We should support it with volunteerism,” Rifaat said. She urged donations and attendance at benefit events to support the squads.
When asked what they thought was the appropriate level of development in the county, each candidate complimented the current level of preservation in the county.
“We have held off development so far, and our Board of Supervisors has done a good job,” said Rifaat, adding that she wants to concentrate housing in the vicinity of villages.
“I think our comprehensive plan is strong,” Wayland said. “Just look at the counties around us. We’re an oasis.”
Wayland said he thinks that development in the county is inevitable, but it needs to be guided.
Estes-Baader agreed that the county’s comprehensive plan is strong and said, “I think we need to stay committed to the [one house per] 25 acres [rule] and increase easements as well.”
The county’s shortage of affordable housing was covered extensively at the forum.
