The measure was adopted in response to a law authorized by the General Assembly in July. The law allows local jurisdictions to impose restitution of up to $250 for reckless driving incidents that necessitate the use of emergency services. Two other Virginia counties have already adopted similar ordinances and McCarthy said he expects several more to follow suit in coming months.
Luke said the previous protocol for collecting restitution for reckless driving was very cumbersome and required jurisdictions to gather witnesses and determine the hourly pay rate for emergency responders.
