“Whenever there’s a violation like this ... we usually end up sending emergency responders. And that causes costs. We bum gas, we use equipment,” McCarthy said. “This is an attempt to recoup some of those costs.”
Operating expenses for the county’s emergency services are paid for through public tax dollars, but the force is made up of volunteers. They are strapped for cash, but more overworked than anything else, McCarthy said.
“This isn’t bad luck happening to somebody, this is somebody being obnoxious,” McCarthy said. “[Reckless drivers] are bringing extra work to fire and rescue [services] and they ought to pay for it.”
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke said he hopes the provision encourages people to drive more safely on county roads, but does not expect it to drastically change drivers’ behavior.
