In the midst of a partially mown hay field surrounded by a group of creatively restored outbuildings that serve as galleries, the “Retreat” will host a weekend-long happening witjrperformances, demonstrations, slide shows, painting, and glasswork, as well as mask-making and paste-paper workshops. There will he several artists participating and showing work, and McCaffreys’ own colorful, complex paintings and whimsical ink drawings will also be on view. The site and activities reflect the personal and very physical nature of McCaffrey’s engagement with art. For her art is a practice, a hands-on, physical experience that might yield an object or produce an inspired gesture, one that could simply be taking off one’s shoes and standing in the stream. McC affray’s background in theatre and nature research has clearly shaped her practice and .continues to inform her teaching. She claims that “Everyone is an artist.
