For accessible sections inside and outside, the investment in a good window-cleaning kit will pay for itself. These kits come with squeegees, sponges and various lengths of pole.
Paper towels can leave lint and debris behind. Better options are newspaper, coffee filters, or even cloth diapers. An inexpensive alternative to commercial window-washing fluid can be found in the pantry: mix one part white vinegar to four parts water.
Butch Bryant, of Four Seasons Sunrooms in Winchester, says regular maintenance helps. He advises working carefully one area at a time, rather than trying to do it all at once. He is also a fan of power-washing for hardto-reach outdoor windows.
Several window manufacturers now offer a coating that makes rainwater sheet off on contact, carrying pollen and dust with it.
