Trees Part I
Diseases weaken trees and shrubs causing them to become candidates for secondary pests. You can often see the effects of these diseases by examining trees for signs of discoloration or defoliation.
Dutch Elm Disease (DED) - This fungus affects the vascular system of American and European elms causing rapid wilting and death. Millions of elms throughout North America and Europe have died due to this disease. Today, many new treatments are available to combat DED, however these treatments need to be preventative. Controlling infected elm trees is very difficult. Additionally, hybrid elms and several new selections of American elm have been developed which show resistance to the disease.
There are many conditions that cause disease in trees and shrubs. The symptoms are varied and the success of treatment depends upon a wide variety of factors. As an I.S.A.
