Visually the movie is stunning in both its lushness and starkness and the contrast between the two. Mehta skillfully juxtaposes the widows’ white attire against the colorful saris of the rest of society; the shaved heads of the widows against the long, lustrous black hair 6f everyone else; and, the dreary, gray, empty hardness of the ashram against the vibrancy of the outside world.
The movie is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving sexual situations, and for brief drug use. Run time is 117 minutes.
