Honoring
our own
The folks in Castleton honored Ray Cannon on Saturday. Ray is the original fire chief founding that station in 1956. Over in Amissville, Chief J.B. Carter was having a festival of sorts giving out free fire detectors to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week. Without exception, this county’s fire and rescue squads are doing their part to not only honor their own but do all they can to bring more into their ranks. It’s a challenge. Here in Rappahannock County, it’s a strictly volunteer calling. Not only that, you can’t just sign on, you also have to go through a rigorous training program.
Attracting young, strong and committed men and women who are willing to be on call 24 hours a day and not pay them anything is a tough order. And yet, throughout this county that is what you will see. The young beside the old responding to calls, helping bring relief when they can or making sure that relief is quickly on the way. Most surrounding counties have semi-paid positions where there is at least some renumeration. Perhaps at some point in the future, this county will move in that direction. Until then, stop by one of their dinners, listen to some good pickin’ music or buy a raffle ticket. Support all of them as they support you each and every day.
