Little Blues over-winter as pupae too as do many swallowtails. They huddle under leaves and branches often in the plant they fed on as caterpillars. Other species like the mourning cloak spend the winter under loose bark and in crevices. You may find them in unheated structures like garages and sheds. During late winter, they soar about; sometimes over snow.
Countless more aboveground insects and spiders are hidden in leaf buds, the rough sides of sticks and inside hollow plant stalks; hidden to us, that is. If you watch the local winter birds like titmice and chickadees, you will see them pecking in these spaces gleaning plenty of protein and fat to help them through the winter.
This is no off-season. From the microscopic creatures under your feet to the birds over your head, winter is a busy time. There is no such thing as a “dead” leaf and it’s all just so interesting!
