I had the same reaction when, in 1992, I read the first book A1 Gore wrote on the environment, Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit. He came so close. Anyone reading it must surely realize the profound ways in which we must change our institutions. But Gore fails to name them.
In An Inconvenient Truth, Gore does, to be sure, mention many ways individuals, groups cities, states and the federal government can improve the situation. He quite rightly points out that each step may seem quite small, but taken together they can help, significantly, to turn things around. But he never openly states the full reality.
The purpose of this article and those that may follow is to explain why nothing less than a sane economy will do.
We must relinquish the notion of doing anything for an ulterior motive. In a sane economy, the only acceptable reason to work is because we see that it must be done or because we see that it could help to bring greater health and happiness into the world.
