The type of glass used will affect price, insulation properties and even maintenance. Choices range from single glazed panes to gasfilled triple-paned windows. There are special filters available, and even a coating that is ‘self cleaning.’
“Low E-Glass” is coated with metallic oxide and blocks ultraviolet light. Heat reflects off the pane to prevent a ‘greenhouse effect’ indoors. Increased comfort and the savings in air conditioning costs offset the higher glass price.
Some double paned glazing is filled with argon for additional insulation from both heat and cold. The gas is denser than air but also non-toxic and odorless.
For safety, some homeowners choose tempered glass for their sunroom. In case of disaster, the glass shatters rather than creating large, dangerous shards.
