in your one square yard of leaf litter. Springtails, tiny wingless insects, evolved so long ago wings hadn’t been invented yet. Instead they have forked structures which allow them to launch up into the air if they need to. This jumping gave them the nickname “snow fleas” though they have no interest in your dog or cat. They are all about devouring organic matter and making it smaller so fungi and bacteria can make nutrients available to your plants.
The Springtails’ co-workers down there are mites. Again, these mites have no desire to infest you or any animal; they are herbivorous. About 5,000 mites, give or
