Still, the good ones far outweigh the bad ones and they are busy in that leaf litter turning it into homes and nurseries and garden centers for the invertebrate world.
A few inches below the winter leaf litter is soil. The soil is probably around 40 degrees even during a real cold snap and a lot of its citizens don’t even care that it’s winter. Unless it’s been badly compacted, that soil is riddled with pore spaces where creatures live on thin layers of water coating the walls of these minute caves. They swim and rest and eat and break down more organic matter even smaller for fungi to feed to your plants.
Still, any second, a mite or roundworm could break into their home and gobble them up.
