A new reservoir of stories about the area where we live will come on stream when a new quarterly magazine called The Piedmont Virginian begins publishing in a few months. Local entrepreneur Walter Nicklin is the driving force behind the venture. Last week Nicklin explained the reasoning behind the enterprise and where the name originated.
“This was the name of a newspaper in northern Fauquier County in the 1970s,” Nicklin began. “It was a good little paper, and the idea was to promote the Piedmont the way it was. Now I think you can take that same idea and have it work.”
Nicklin said that the idea for the magazine has been in his mind for years.
“I’ve been playing with the idea for three or four years now, and I think that each part of the world could have a big quality magazine ... sort of a combination of Vanity Fair and a city or regional magazine, with a smattering of a literary magazine.
“What makes this place so special is the history and the natural beauty,” he continued. “The motto of The Piedmont Virginian is ‘Serving and celebrating America’s historic heart.’ ”
