Reckless drivers on Rappahannock County’s roads are in for stiffer penalties under a new law approved by the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors.
Under the new ordinance, which went into effect Oct. 2, $250 in restitution will be tacked on top of any other penalties incurred by a person who is criminally responsible for an automotive collision that requires emergency services.
Violations that may lead to restitution include reckless and impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked driver’s license. When such activities lead to the use of emergency services, a judge will decide whether to impose restitution.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the measure aims to make up for the county’s costs associated with reckless driving incidents.
