Hans Gerhard’s studio in nearby Slate Mills is a reconstructed eighteenth century cabin, complete with original timbers, set in the rolling meadows of his Hughes River Farm. The bucolic setting, however, is not the subject of Gerhard’s work. It simply allows him the peace and tranquility to paint and sculpt. Some might call his work “high modernist” for its formality and lack of representational content; its juxtaposed or intertwined forms only hint at natural or mental landscapes.
