Rifaat said the county needs to start addressing the affordable housing issue by developing rental properties where space is available, such as in vacant lots and above garages.
Rifaat went on to say that lack of affordable housing makes it difficult for the county to attract and keep teachers and staff its volunteer fire and rescue services.
“Affordable housing in the county has always been a problem,” said Wayland, who wants the board to study what other counties have done to develop affordable housing that fits into the character of the county.
