The Amissville and Castleton Fire Departments are offering free smoke detectors to those whose homes are not equipped with the life-saving devices.
The chief of the Amissville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, J.B. Carter, Jr., has a supply of the smoke detectors, which were made available through a grant from the Commonwealth. “Castleton had a bunch of these and shared them with us,” said Carter.
The chief also pointed out that for those who already have smoke detectors in their homes, it is time for two things: one, change the batteries; two, vacuum the smoke detector. Chief Carter points out that the sensing system in the detector can react to dust and sound a false alarm-“so it is best, ‘ he cautioned, “to run the hose of the vacuum carefully clear around the device.”
Chief Carter also points out that the new detectors being offered without charge have batteries that will last ten years. That’s right, ten years.
