Oct. 19-22: Yorktown Commemorates 225th Anniversary
of the Winning of Independence
Oct. 19 marks the 225th anniversary of General George Washington’s victory over the British at Yorktown, the climactic day of the American Revolution, the battle that secured independence for the emerging United States of America. This landmark anniversary will be celebrated October 19-22 with a four-day “Salute to the Military.” Re-enactments, parades, patriotic ceremonies, fireworks, live performances, tall ship displays, cultural events and hands-on activities will take place at the Yorktown National Battlefield, Riverwalk Landing and the Yorktown Victory Center. The 1781 victory at Yorktown occurred just 20 miles away from Jamestown, where the seeds of the nation were planted 174 years earlier, in 1607. Accordingly, the Yorktown anniversary is a signature event of America’s 400th Anniversary, the national commemoration of the quadricentennial of the founding of America’s first permanent English settlement. The Nonprofit Center is hosting a grant writing workshop on October 19 and 20 from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. at its new office location in Sperryville. The office is located at the comer of Rt. 522 and US 211 in the building below Antique Tables Made Daily, in the former location of Rae’s Deli. The seminar is hosted by Grant Writing U.S.A.
