Man of many hats
Nicklin - who grew up in Warrenton - has a personal history of risk-taking that has panned out. After graduating from Washington and Lee, he went into the Army and was sent to Europe before going to grad school at the University of Virginia.
“I studied foreign affairs,” he recounted, “because I wanted to be a foreign correspondent. After graduating, I went back to Europe and worked for UPI and The Economist as well as for a magazine called ‘Europe,’ which was designed for people interested in European union issues.”
Returning home, he moved to Rappahannock County.
“I had started buying land in Rappahannock in the early 1970s, and I built a cabin out there, and I noticed the traffic on the weekends,” he said. “There seemed to be a number of people like me who were coming into the country, so I started a magazine for this area called ‘Country Magazine’ for the area that covered the Chesapeake watershed.
“People tend to destroy what they love,” he continued, “and the idea editorially behind the magazine was to instill an appreciation for everything here, hoping that the new people would think twice about changing it. Later,
