The issues
Question 1. Virginia’s budget surplus should be invested in necessary educational, transportation and other requirements and returned to the taxpayers, whose hard-earned money it is in the first place. Question 2. While we are moving Virginia forward, there is still much to be done. Unfortunately, drug use by our children is on the rise. We must attack the drug problem as firmly and expeditiously as we have the problem of repeat violent criminals. Question 3. Yes, Virginia is open for business and the “Silicon Dominion” is experiencing spectacular growth. Such growth requires and rewards highly trained employees. Virginia is meeting the challenge of preparing them by raising standards in our public schools, and matching those standards with requirements for accountability and accreditation. Question 4. Over the past four years, we have increased our investment in public education by well over a billion dollars — without raising taxes. More importantly, we have made real progress toward improving standards and returning to basic instruction in reading, writing, math, science and history. Question 5. My vision is of a Rappahannock County where our youngsters look forward to attending our public schools. Where teachers are paid adequately and have ample means available for instruction. Where our technology is up to date and where safety prevails. Where high standards and accountability produce needed results. Where innovation is encouraged.
