In 1992 bonus points determined the championship. The battle came down to dramatic final-race duel between Bill Elliot and the late Alan Kulwicki. Elliot won the season-ending race at Atlanta, but he made a pit stop too soon during the event to win the five bonus points for leading the most laps. Kulwicki led the most laps, and won the championship by 10 points. Should Elliot have led the most laps, the championship points would have been tied, and Elliot would have been crowned the champion by virtue of scoring the most victories.
The chances of a tie in points is remote. Martin and Jarrett don’t have enough wins to grab the championship by virtue of a tie anyway, so they need to hope the Gordon team falters.
Gordon’s crew chief, Ray Evemham, has proven he can put a sturdy mount underneath his driver. And as part of the three-car Rick Hendrick-owned team, which won the title last year with driver Terry Labonte, it is doubtful that Gordon’s Chevrolet team will falter. They have the resources to arrive at the track prepared. It will take bad luck to drive Gordon put of the point lead.
But Martin and Jarrett are just the drivers to take advantage of Gordon’s bad luck. Martin, a member of the multi-car Jack Rousch Ford stable, has an excellent crew chief in Jimmy Finnig. And Jarrett, part of Robert Yates’ multicar Ford effort, is in the capable hands of crew chief Todd Parrott.
Jeff Gordon could win the final races of the 1997 Winston Cup season. There is also the possibility that racing luck could turn against him as he wheels his 700 horse power, 3,500-pound Monte Carlo at breakneck speeds against his competition.
The 1997 Winston Cup championship has not been decided. It is usually decided in the final race of the year. Martin and Jarrett are ready to pounce. The Nov. 16 NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway could decide it all.
