Sunny days and

The conditions that favor the most dramatic changes resulting in vibrant reds are warm, sunny days followed by cool nights when the temperature dips below 45F. Familiar trees that turn red are red and silver maples, flowering dogwood, sweet gum, black tupelo (black gum), northern red oak, scarlet oak and sassafras.
