Scuff A tire that has been used at least once. Race teams will sometimes scuff tires in practice sessions by putting the tires on the car for two or three high-speed laps and then save the tires for use during a race. Tire compounds change once the compound has been heated and cooled again.
Short Track Refers to an oval race track under one mile in length.
Shunt Term usually found in road racing, meaning a mishap or accident.
Slick This refers to a tire with no tread. It also refers to a track on which tires do not get good traction, or bite.
Slingshot A pass made by use of drafting. By taking advantage of the lessoned wind resistance behind a lead car, a car can build speed, pull out from behind the lead car, and pass. This is called a slingshot.
