Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Gary T. Hamm, son of David L. Hamm of Amissville recently departed on a sixmonth deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the guided missile cruiser USS South Carolina.
Hamm is one of more than 600 sailors aboard the ship, which departed its home port of Norfolk, as part of the USS George Washington Battle Group, comprised of eight tactical aircraft squadrons, seven surface combatants and two submarines. The battle group is replacing the USS John F. Kennedy Battle Group, which has been deployed since April.
