And there is the Indy Racing League, a new sanction that controls the world’s largest single-day sporting event, the Indy 500. It did not make the top five on Goodyear’s list in 1996 because it only held five events that year. But the fledgling sanction is adding new events all the time. Most importantly, it sanctions the Indy 500. More than 500,000 spectators attend that race alone.
There is bracket racing, a form of drag racing that equalizes the competition by timing a car in a “dial in” prior to the race. The racers’ starts are staggered to make up for the difference in their dial-in times, and the first one to the finish line wins. But if a car goes quicker than it dialed in, it is disqualified. Sumerduck, Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, and Hagerstown Dragway in Maryland host bracket events.
