Rappahannock hosted the 1997 Bull Run District Cross Country Meet Championship.
Last week’s event saw Rappahannock’s Mark Williams take first place in the district for the varsity race with a time of 17:55.
Rappahannock’s Willie Collins was a close second with a time of 18:00. They were a whopping 25 seconds ahead of the nearest challenger from Brentsville High School.
Williams and Collins led the run the entire time, exchanging first place several times and occasionally challenged by a Brentsville runner.
Brentsville took third, fourth, fifth and sixth, but Matt Wolfe, of Rappahannock was only a second behind the four from Brentsville, who all had a time of 18:25 — crossing the finish line together.
While Brentsville took eighth, Chad Heddleston breezed in with a time of 18:52 to secure ninth place for Rappahannock.
A runner from Manassas Park took tenth.
Tommy Baldwin, with 19:37, and Adam Starks, with 19:52, were twelfth and’ fifteenth, which ensures them a spot at regionals for an individual medal.
Brentsville had the edge for the District Championship, with Rappahannock second and Mason third. Manassas Park did not have enough runners to field a tehm.
The girls’ varsity run was equally exciting.
