Every member of a race team is important, as is every player on a football team. The chassis specialist or engine specialist on a race team is as important as any offensive or defensive player in football. No matter the form of racing, the winning driver has a winning team to thank for the victory.
To understand the various forms of racing, a look at attendance figures supplied by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for the 1996 season gives a good overview of the major forms of auto racing in the United States.
The most popular form of racing in North America, and in the world, is the Winston Cup series. Sponsored by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Winston Cup’s roots go back about 50 years on dirt oval tracks. The cars were stock then.
Now the cars are stock in appearance only, and the dirt ovals have been replaced primarily with high-speed, paved ovals. In 1996, NASCAR held 31 Winston Cup events for the Ford,
