UNIVERSAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Jonathan Swift once wrote, “It is impossible that anything so natural, so necessary, and so universal as death should ever have been designed by Providence as an evil to mankind.” These remarks might bring us closer to the notion that is it our reaction to death that is its most terrible element. No other living thing brings such anxiety to thoughts of its demise. This most likely stems from the fact that no other living being is capable of such reflection on life and its place in it. If we humans were to relinquish our dread over death for a moment and see it for what it actually is, we might come to regard it more as part of life than the absence of it. Perhaps without death, we would fail to appreciate life’s beauty and preciousness, because we would always feel there would be “a next time.” The knowledge of endings can make us appreciate the middle of things, knowing as we do, that life always brings change and with it, loss.
