Professional sports car racing
is in for some major
changes in 1998.
Officials of the Sports
Car Club of America and its
subsidiary, Pro Racing, recently met in New York City with representatives of most major road racing circuits in North America. Also in attendance were NASCAR head Bill France Jr., as well as Rob Dyson.
The result was the formation of the new United States Road Racing Championship group, which will oversee the Trans-Am series as well as a new GT tour, and a revived CanAm series, using the World Sports Cars now running under Professional Sportscar Inc., sanction.
It was also announced that the 24hour endurance race at Daytona, formerly a Professional Sportscar event, will now run with USRRC sanction. Professional Sportscar, formerly known as International Motor Sports Association, will be history before the green flag drops at Daytona — and its owner, Andy Evans, has himself to blame.
