The October program of the Rappahannock County Garden • Club was about “Gardening With Virginia Natives.” The speaker for the meeting was Mary Painter of Hume, who was introduced by club member Sandra Anderson. Mary has been very active in the Native Plant movement and her talk reflected her deep concern for some of our native plants which are threatened by the introduction of imported species.
She urged club members to include some wild flowers in their garden plantings to insure continued propagation of plants that are being crowded out of existence. She cautioned that native plants which are sold by nurseries should be nursery grown and not plants taken from the wild.
