IMbA was on the block. One of those interested in purchasing the organization was NASCAR. Also interested was Dyson, who led a syndicate of team owners interested in purchasing the non-profit sanction. Evans bought the group out from under all of them.
Then, when the United States Auto Club was for sale, Evans outbid NASCAR again, straining an already fragile relationship. And as the SCCA and Evans discussed the possible merger of their professional racing categories, -Evans suddenly announced the formation of a road racing stock car series to compete with Trans-Am, at a time when the SCCA was in final negotiations with a series sponsor.
Those racing plans were dropped, but Evans had already strained too many relationships and tested too many individuals’ patience.
Evans has threatened an antitrust suit, but let’s face it, sports car racers and tracks can go with whomever they wish. And with reports that Professional Sportscar competitors have not been paid, Evans has little to offer those racers for their loyalty. ■
