It is the non-point pollution issue, he said, and Pfiesteria has made it a big issue. In Rappahannock, helping with non-point pollution means keeping cows out of the streams and using buffer zones, he said.
History
What has happened in the Chesapeake Bay is nothing in comparison to the serious fishkills in North Carolina, said Lacouture. In 1991-93, Burkholder investigated 33 fish-kills in North Carolina with over 1,000 fish dead in each case. She found Pfiesteria in high density with fish lesions in 17 of the cases.
Over one billion fish were killed by Pfiesteria on the Pamlico River there, but the state still has not admitted there is a Pfiesteria problem.
In 1992 Pfiesteria was found on a tidal creed off the Choptank River in Maryland. It was cultured in a laboratory, the next two occurrences were in 1994 and 1996 at the Patuxant River, and in 1996, Pfiesteria was the suspected cause of an estimated $25,QOO loss in striped bass at an aquaculture facility in Maryland.
Most recently in 1997 at the Pocomoke and Chicamacomeco rivers, and Kings Creek off the Manokin fish lesions and fishkills were documented and Pfiesteria is the suspected
