Taking tickets and exercising crowd control are their duties as members of the Brickyard’s safety patrol. Marty said it makes for a long day and only pays minimum wage — but they save $100 a day with the free parking. That’s a welcome savings, since Kit has watched ticket prices rise from $35 to $100.
When the Carsons aren’t headed to or from a race, they manage to keep busy. They’re part of a hot air balloon crew: Marty helps with launch and retrieval and Kit drives the chase car. And on sunny days Kit flies gliders in New Market.
But, Kit said, “We’ll be back in our usual place on Feb. 15 in the infield at Daytona. If you want to come see us, we’ll be in slot number 19.”
