asked to attend behind the grandstands each week and Kids Night, when kids are allowed to sit in the race cars, help bring the fans out. And there’s student night, when the track hands out five $100 scholarships.
“The track wants to give back to the community,” Stan Dillon, 54, the track’s PR man, said. “We get the local churches involved by having area ministers sing our national anthem or say the racer’s prayer. And we let them bring in their youth groups.”
Potomac Speedway, a three-eighths mile oval in Budds Creek, Md., also enjoys what promoter Pete Cameron calls “a respectable crowd.”
Cameron used to race at the track, which has operated since 1972. After racing for 13 years and winning four track championships and about 40 feature wins at Potomac and the nowdefunct Dorsey Speedway, in Maryland, Cameron took over the promoting chores at Potomac in 1988.
Potomac operates on Friday nights without sanction. The late models, which run under a unique restrictive engine rule, not only draw large fields of racers, but pack the stands, too.
